This lets you include images of different sizes. Under Image Settings, check the box next to Zoom to Fill. ![]() Under Layout Style, select Single Image/Contact Sheet. Import the images into Lightroom and select them. It is easier to change the size of your tiles in Lightroom, and this program lets you create a mosaic pattern without the dividing lines between images. In Lightroom, the process of creating a contact sheet is more flexible than it is in Photoshop. Alternate Step: Create a Contact Sheet in Lightroom Go to the bottom of the Layers panel and turn off the eye icon next to the white background layer. Hold the Shift key and drag the edges of the image until it fills up the space. ![]() Select Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl or Cmd+T). Unlink the thumbnail from the layer mask by clicking the chain between the layer and the layer mask. If there is a lot of white space around an image, select the layer containing this image. Repeat the process to move another image into the blank space. Choose the Move tool and move the image to a different position. Select the layer containing the image you want to move. Use the Move tool to drag these files to a new position on the page. Notice that some of my duplicate photos are next to each other. You can move the images around to get a more pleasing pattern. Your contact sheet should look something like this. ![]() You can choose to place them across first or down.Ĭlick OK and wait for Photoshop to load all the images in the file. Then, enter the number of images in each column and row. In the Thumbnail section, check the box next to Use Auto-Spacing. Create a square canvas (25x25cm or 10×10″) if your files are square. Create a rectangular canvas if your source images are rectangular (20x30cm or 12×8″). Each image will become a layer that you can change later. In the Document section, uncheck the Flatten All Layers box. In the dialog box, click the Choose button, and navigate to the folder containing your mosaic images. Select File > Automate > Contact Sheet II. In Photoshop, go to the File drop-down menu. Then, I will show you how to use Lightroom to create the contact sheet. Let’s start by making a contact sheet in Photoshop. You can create a basic contact sheet in Photoshop, but the process is more flexible in Lightroom. We still use contact sheets to present many photos at one glance. Originally, contact sheets showed the images on a roll of film. A contact sheet is a series of photo thumbnails. To make the photo mosaic background, create a contact sheet. Step 3: Create a Mosaic Pattern in Photoshop The image size can be small-300px at 72 dpi should be fine. The images selected are now the same size. Export the images to a Mosaic folder. Click Sync at the bottom of the right-hand column. Highlight the resized image, hold the Shift key, and select the other pictures in the Collection. For instance, you can size the tiles as rectangular 2:3 or square 1:1. Use the Crop tool in the Develop module to size it to the aspect ratio you want to use for the mosaic pattern. Start by importing your images into Lightroom. But you can automate the process in Lightroom. In Photoshop, you have to resize each image one by one. The mosaic pattern will be easier to create if all the images are the same size. Just make sure the duplicate images are not next to each other in the folder. Put them in a folder labeled “Mosaic.” You can use duplicates if you want. But it is best if the total number is a perfect square. Select File > Open (Ctrl or Cmd+O) and navigate to your photo.Ĭhoose the small images you want to use in the background mosaic pattern. Open the image in Photoshop by going to the File drop-down menu. For this tutorial, I chose a recognizable symbol of India-the Taj Mahal. If the image is too complicated, the mosaic effect may be lost. Choose a photo that is instantly recognizable and is not too busy. Making a photo mosaic is actually pretty easy with the right Photoshop techniques! Step 1: Open your Main Image in Adobe PhotoshopĬhoose one main image that you want to feature. You will not be placing each tile individually. To make a photo mosaic, you will need one primary photograph and up to 100 individual photos for the tiles. ![]() Buy from Unavailable Making a Photo Mosaic in Photoshop ![]() The filling order simply begins at hydrogen and includes each subshell as you proceed in increasing Z order. Figure 10.5d illustrates this method for determining the electron configuration. Since the arrangement of the periodic table is based on the electron configurations, the periodic table can be converted to an electron configuration table to map out electron filling order. Simply make a column for all the s orbitals with each n shell on a separate row. This chart is straightforward to construct. Figure 10.5c Using the Aufbau Principle to Determine Appropriate Filling Order for Electron Configurations: The arrow leads through each subshell in the appropriate filling order for electron configurations. It is a helpful schematic to use when writing electron configurations or drawing orbital diagrams. Figure 10.5c illustrates the traditional way to remember the filling order for atomic orbitals. Electrons enter higher-energy subshells only after lower-energy subshells have been filled to capacity. Each added electron occupies the subshell of lowest energy available (in the order shown in Figure 10.5a), subject to the limitations imposed by the allowed quantum numbers according to the Pauli exclusion principle. This procedure is called the Aufbau principle, from the German word Aufbau (“to build up”). Beginning with hydrogen, and continuing across the periods of the periodic table, we add one proton at a time to the nucleus and one electron to the proper subshell until we have described the electron configurations of all the elements. To determine the electron configuration (electron filling order) for any particular atom, we can “build” the structures in the order of atomic numbers. Figure 10.5b The diagram of an Electron Configuration for Hydrogen: The diagram of an electron configuration specifies the subshell ( n and l value, with letter symbol) and superscript number of electrons (credit: Chemistry (OpenStax), CC BY 4.0). The notation 3 d 8 (read “three–d–eight”) indicates eight electrons in the d subshell (i.e., l = 2) of the principal shell for which n = 3. A superscript number that designates the number of electrons in that particular subshell.įor example, the notation 2 p 4 (read “two–p–four”) indicates four electrons in a p subshell ( l = 1) with a principal quantum number ( n) of 2.The letter that designates the orbital type (the subshell, l), and.The number of the principal energy level (shell), n,.We write an electron configuration with a symbol that contains three pieces of information (Figure 10.5b): It is important to apply the electron capacity rules for each type of subshell ( l): Both methods will be introduced in this section. The arrangement of electrons in the orbitals of an atom is commonly represented using two methods: orbital diagrams and electron configurations of an atom. We will discuss methods for remembering the observed order. For small orbitals (1 s through 3 p), the increase in energy due to n is more significant than the increase due to l however, for larger orbitals the two trends are comparable and cannot be simply predicted. Electrons in orbitals that experience more shielding are less stabilized and thus higher in energy. Electrons that are closer to the nucleus slightly repel electrons that are farther out, offsetting the more dominant electron–nucleus attractions slightly (recall that all electrons have −1 charges, but nuclei have + Z charges). In any atom with two or more electrons, the repulsion between the electrons makes energies of subshells with different values of l differ so that the energy of the orbitals increases within a shell in the order s p > d > f. The energy of atomic orbitals increases as the principal quantum number, n, increases. The specific arrangement of electrons in orbitals of an atom determines many of the chemical properties of that atom. This allows us to determine which orbitals are occupied by electrons in each atom. Having introduced the basics of atomic structure and quantum mechanics, we can use our understanding of quantum numbers to determine how atomic orbitals relate to one another. We have white tile floors on one level of our house. ![]() I use a bottle of Wite-Out to cover nicks on anything colored white: walls, refrigerator doors, the oven, tile, etc. The varieties of Wite-Out and Liquid Paper have shrunk in recent years, unfortunately, making it harder to find the right kind for one’s preferred sort of ink, and the ubiquitous foam wedges are less reliable than the brushes used to be. Those of us who do crossword puzzles every day regardless of difficulty, on paper and always in ink, occasionally need Wite-Out to provide a clean slate when the puzzle gets too messy. We used Wite-Out on the lipstick, and everything worked out just fine! I always have a box of it in the office for situations like that!” The next day, I called the caterer and asked what had happened with the lipstick problem. “Nothing good is going to happen here,” my wife said. It went down the front of the bride’s white wedding gown minutes before the ceremony, prompting the howl I heard. It turns out that the bride’s mother dropped the lipstick. My wife ran out of the room, grabbed me, and grimly said, “Let’s get out of here.” I stood outside waiting when, all of a sudden, a g-d-awful shriek was heard. My wife and I were at a wedding years ago, and as we were leaving the festivities, she went to the ladies’ room, where the bride for the next wedding was with her mother, putting on makeup. Permit me to add another use for the white stuff. What a tangled web we weave when we use Wite-Out to deceive … :-) If I had to guess why correction fluids’ sales outpace those of other, dwindling office supplies, I’d put my money on its under-the-table use! But we stopped actually helping people falsify documents. If people have their own, it’s no business of ours what they do with it. We still offer a typewriter at the library (as well as computers, of course, which are used more conventionally), but we stopped offering correction fluids at the reference desks for this reason. for their landlord, a potential employer, or the government. As a librarian, I thought you would find it interesting that Liquid Paper and Wite-Out are still very popular at our library-as a means for people to alter forms! (Also, cannabis is legal in an ever-growing number of states. To put this in black and white, so to speak: This is a very bad idea. Oops! Speaking of bad ideas, a surprising number of people wrote to say that they suspected one reason for Wite-Out’s resilience was that it can be sniffed to get high, though most of them were quick to assure me that while they knew people who had done so, they themselves were not users. And while I noted a few possible reasons that the correction-fluids business remains strong-sales of Wite-Out itself jumped 10 percent in 2017-there are a great many more unorthodox uses for sticky white fluid and its tape-based sibling that I didn’t cover.įirst, I should acknowledge that I may have committed a fatal error in writing the story itself: “First rule of wite-out.
